Gigaku from Jinchi youroku (1177 - ) by Moronaga Fujiwara



Gigaku is the show with music without voice for buddhism. It was imported in 7c in Japan.

It was played with short flute, percussion and small symbal. This one is played with traditional harp.

There are a few surviving original music score includes Gigaku. Jinchi youroku volume 12 has it.

It has 9 short pieces.

  1. Shishi / 師子
    This one is Lion dance. The music is very different to local lion dance in Mie prefecture.
  2. Meido / 冥土
    This is called Gokou / 呉公, too. Gokou means the king of ancient Go dynasty. The dynasty had buddhism inside.
  3. Kongou / 金剛
    This is one of the savers of buddhism.
  4. Rikishi / 力士
    This is the other of the savers of buddhism.
  5. Karura / 迦楼羅
    Bird monster.
  6. Konron / 崑崙
    Slave of african. The ancient china used slave at least in 9c.
  7. Baramon / 婆羅門
    Brahman. In the ancient India, This religion dominated people.
  8. Taiko / 大弧
    Old man who believe buddhism
  9. Suiko / 酔弧
    Drunken King and its subbordinate in west asia.
